Traditional Weaving Experience

Spend time with Quechua artisans and learn how traditional weaving is practiced in daily life

Overview

What Is This Weaving Experience?

Begin in Ollantaytambo before continuing into the high Andes, where you’ll spend time with women artisans in a rural Quechua community.

This is not a demonstration—it’s a visit to a place where weaving is part of daily life and cultural identity. During your time there, you’ll learn directly from the women who continue these traditions, gaining a clearer understanding of how textiles are made and what they represent.

What You’ll Do

Visit a Quechua Village in the Andes

Travel through the Sacred Valley into the Patacancha region, moving from town into a landscape of farms, terraces, and mountain communities where daily routines continue across generations.

Learn the Full Weaving Process

Artisans will walk you through every step of their craft. These techniques are part of long-standing Andean weaving techniques and traditions and are still practiced in the communities you’ll visit.

• spinning alpaca or sheep wool by hand
• dyeing yarn using natural plants and materials
• preparing and weaving on a traditional backstrap loom

Try Weaving Yourself

You’ll have the opportunity to take part in the process:

• spinning wool using a drop spindle
• weaving a small bracelet on a backstrap loom

This hands-on element is what makes the weaving experience memorable—not just watching, but participating.

Share a Traditional Andean Meal

Enjoy a home-cooked meal prepared by your host community using local ingredients. This time together is part of the visit itself, reflecting how food and hospitality are woven into daily life.

Visit a Private Textile Market

Before leaving, you’ll have the opportunity to purchase textiles directly from the women who made them, creating a direct connection between the work you’ve seen and the finished pieces.
