Awamaki Artisan Product Sewer: Sr. Thomas

Sr. Tommy

Artisan Product Sewer

Hometown: Chinchero, Peru

Sr. Tomas was born and raised in Chinchero, Urubamba, where he still resides. He is responsible for finishing products at Awamaki, taking the woven textile made by our artisan partners and creating card wallets, handbags, pillow covers and more. He cuts materials to pattern, adds zippers, cuts and sews leather. Tomas began to sew at the age of 14, when he moved from his home town of Chinchero, Peru, to nearby Cusco, where he lived for 10 years. There, he worked his way up at a company specializing in school uniforms. For the past 35 years he has also had a shop of his own in Chinchero, where he makes school uniforms and traditional clothes. Currently he divides his time between his shop and the studio at Awamaki. Tomas has been with Awamaki for eight years and his incredible craftsmanship has made him invaluable to the team. Outside of work he enjoys playing recreational soccer with his community.
